Introduction
This note walks you through copying the content of an Egnyte folder into a Google Drive folder. You do it with a one-way sync pair in cloudHQ. One-way covers changes that start on the Egnyte side: they show up in Google Drive. Anything you change in Google Drive stays there. It does not travel back to Egnyte.
Each step tells you what to click and what the page shows after the click. At the end you can see which options are on and which are off for the new pair, plus what the pair looks like while the first copy of your data is running.
Before you start
- Log in to cloudHQ, then go to the Cloud Accounts tab (https://www.cloudhq.net/services).
- Look through your cloud accounts and make sure Egnyte and Google Drive both appear there with no Authorization Error beside them. If either one isn’t listed, add it on that page before you continue. You always handle the Egnyte and Google sign-in and permission screens yourself.
- Get the Egnyte folder and the Google Drive folder ready. If you want to copy into a Google Drive folder that already exists, that folder has to sit in the account you pick.
Create the sync pair
- Open the wizard
Go to the Sync & Backup tab and click the Add New Sync Pair button. The page What Do You Want to Do? comes up. Click the Create One Sync Pair » button on it. The button next to it, For IT Admins: Multiple Users Set Up », is there for setting up many users at the same time.
- Choose one-way sync
The wizard opens as a wizard for a two-way sync. Use the Switch to one-way sync button to change that. The title now reads Backup / Migration Wizard, and the arrow between the two boxes points one way only. - Choose the Egnyte folder
Look at the Select Service list and click the Egnyte icon. That puts the Egnyte icon in the first box.Find Select Account and click the Select button that sits next to your Egnyte account.
In the Select folder tree, use the small arrows to open folders. Click the folder you want to copy. The line Selected: shows the whole path. After that, click the Select » button.
- Choose the Google Drive folder
The second box is active now. Pick the Google Drive icon.Look under Select Account and click the Select button next to your Google Drive account.
Next, a page opens with the question Where would you like to replicate or sync into? You get four choices there: the root folder of the Google Drive account, a new folder, an existing Google Drive folder, or a snapshot of a folder taken at a certain point in time. If the folder you want already exists, select I’d like to backup (replicate) Egnyte data into an existing Google Drive folder and click the Next » button.
In the Select folder to sync tree, open Google Drive with the small arrow and click your folder. The account and the folder both show on the line Selected:. Use the Select » button to confirm it.
- Check your selection and click OK
A window titled Please double-check your selection lists the sync pair that is about to be created, from the Egnyte folder to the Google Drive folder. The arrow -> tells you the sync is one-way: the content of the first folder shows up in the second one. Give it a read, then click the OK button. The sync starts right away, and no separate start button is needed.
The synchronization options
Click OK and the Synchronization Options page opens with Synchronization is already running on it. Again the page tells you the sync is one way: only changes you make on the first service show up in the second service.
To see the other options, click Show advanced options.
Our test gave the new pair the settings below. You do not have to change any of them for the pair to work.
- Granularity: check and sync every 10 minutes. You choose a value from a list. Egnyte caps the number of API calls you can make, so dropping to a lower granularity means fewer calls. A higher granularity gives you a faster (real-time) sync, and that costs more Egnyte API calls.
- Exclude folders from sync: off. Switch it on if certain folders should not be copied.
- Archive files before they are changed or deleted by sync: off. With this on, cloudHQ puts a copy of a file into a “cloudHQ_archive” folder before that file is changed or deleted, which lets you restore earlier versions. It has to be on for a backup.
- Automatically re-copy files if we detect tampering of copies on the target: on. Should someone change or delete a file on the Google Drive side, cloudHQ fetches the original file from Egnyte once more. It has to be on for a backup.
- Convert documents into Google Docs format when uploaded to Google Drive: off. With this on, cloudHQ converts documents into Google Docs format as it uploads them to Google Drive.
- Replicate deletion: on. Delete a file in Egnyte and it gets deleted on the Google Drive side as well. Those deleted files stay protected when the archive option is on. It has to be on for a backup.
- Automatically delete all files on the target which are not created by cloudHQ: off. With this on, cloudHQ deletes files in Google Drive that it did not create too. Leave it off unless you are certain.
- Sync only photos (skip all files which are not images): off. With this on, only image files get copied and every other file is skipped.
See the initial transfer in progress
Go back to the Sync & Backup tab (https://www.cloudhq.net/synch). The Status at the top says the initial transfer of data is running. While this first transfer runs, only old data gets copied, meaning the data already saved in the cloud service. There’s no need to keep your computer or browser open, because the transfer runs on our servers. When it’s done, we send you an email.
Inside Sync Pairs, open the group that carries your Egnyte account name. You’ll see the source, the target, and a red message: Catalog of data and initial data transfer is in progress. We will send you an email as soon as the initial transfer finishes. The buttons below it are Pause, View Sync Events, Modify Options and Delete Sync Pair.
