What is an Unsubscribe Link Merge Tag?

An unsubscribe link merge tag is a code you put in your email. It gives people an easy way to opt-out if they don’t want to get your emails anymore. When they click this link, they can stop getting all or some of your emails.

Using an unsubscribe link is smart for customer happiness and is often legally required, like the CAN-SPAM Act in the US. It prevents your emails from being marked as spam and ensures they reach the people who want them.

How Does the Unsubscribe Link Work?

If the email is sent via MailKing or Gmail Auto Follow Up by cloudHQ, cloudHQ will replace the unsubscribe link merge tag with a unique URL for each person. Unsubscribed users will appear in the Unsubscribe tab.

If you send the email directly from Gmail, you will get an email notification when someone unsubscribes.

How to Add an Unsubscribe Link Merge Tag to My Template?

Text-only Email Templates

To add an unsubscribe link to text-only email templates, click on the Merge tag and then select Unsubscribe Link

• Place the cursor where you want to insert the unsubscribe link in the email body.
• Go to the Merge Tags menu and select Unsubscribe Link. This will insert a pre-configured unsubscribe link into your email.
  

You can also insert it by typing the Merge Tag directly.

• Place the cursor where you want the unsubscribe link to appear.
• Type the merge tag in directly into the text editor:

  *|UNSUB|*

  

HTML Designed Templates

You can add an unsubscribe link to HTML email templates in two ways:

1. Add an unsubscribe block
2. Add the *|UNSUB|* merge tag to a text block

Add Unsubscribe Block

For HTML designed email templates, the unsubscribe link is managed through the controls on the right panel of the cloudHQ wizard. To insert it just drag the unsubscribe block into the email:
