To display a message’s full email headers in Gmail:

  1. Select an email message in Gmail
  2. Select the “more” menu icon – three dots (ellipsis) vertically aligned in the upper right corner of an email
  3. Select Show original
  4. Header information appears in the new Chrome tab:
  5. You can copy the text in the clipboard or download the original as an “eml” file

The original message contains the following fields:

  • Message ID – the digital fingerprint of a message. This is also called RFC822 Message ID.
  • Created on
  • From
  • To
  • Subject
  • SPF – Sender Policy Framework is a DNS record that identifies specific mail servers that are allowed to send an email on behalf of your domain
  • DKIM – DomainKeys Identified Mail is an email security standard designed to make sure messages aren’t altered in transit between the sending and recipient servers
  • DMARC- Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance is a technical standard that helps protect email senders and recipients from spam, spoofing, and phishing
